Jettes Dinerskole. Sara Sjölin. June 6 - June 28, 2024.
»Sjölin is the haruspex of Etruscan lore (a person who foretold events by inspecting an animal’s entrails); she is John Smith’s Girl Chewing Gum collectivising the conjurer’s trick, spitting it out into the flames of the original autonomous Mubi, fire—as the flesh of the wild boar twists and crisps o’erhead—inviting her gaggle of young players to lean closer, as she seems to whisper . . . dance and laugh along life’s footpath, for the only authority is your own, the camera always lies, and it is . . . in one end and out the other.«
-Stanley Schtinter
Sara Sjölin’s main practice revolves around film, speech, performance and installation. In her work, she explores comedy rooted in tragedy, where feelings of anxiety or discomfort can through art be transformed into moments of affection and laughter.
Sara Sjölin holds an MFA from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (2018). Past exhibitions include: SALTS (Basel), New Jörg (Vienna), Lagune Ouest (Copenhagen), Konstnärshuset (Stockholm), Kunsthaus Zürich (Zürich), Bikubenfonden (Copenhagen), Loggia (Munich), Galleri Susanne Ottesen (Copenhagen), Hamlet (Zürich), Celsius Projects (Malmö), Lille Vega (Copenhagen), CPH:DOX film festival (Copenhagen), Copenhagen Contemporary (Copenhagen), Sydhavnsambassaden no. 5 & 6 (Copenhagen), Skjold Contemporary (Copenhagen), Kunsthal Aarhus (Aarhus). Sjölin is the recipient of Niels Wessel Bagges Art Foundation prize (2022) and the Anne Marie Carl Nielsen’s talent prize (2024).
